BABY SEAN PHOTOS - At the Hospital and At Home
DETAILS OF SEAN’S ARRIVAL: We had been monitoring the amniotic fluid levels for a couple of weeks - they had been borderline low on some previous ultrasounds. Because of this we actually had scheduled an induction for late Monday night, the 28th when we reached 37 weeks. The doctor also had us doing “kick counts” three times a day. On Sunday most of the day, Sean had not been moving very much. We had a refresher childbirth class at the hospital in the evening, and he only moved about 3 times in 3 hours (it should be at least 10 every 2 hours). We were eating dinner after the class in the waiting area at the hospital, debating about whether to call the doctor or wait until our appointment the next morning, when our doctor (Hope Cassel) happened by...she was there to check on another patient! We asked her what she thought, and she wanted to do an ultrasound to see what was going on. Sean’s heartbeat was okay, but he just wasn’t moving at all. Dr. Cassel was concerned and said she didn’t know if he would be able to tolerate a vaginal delivery. The next thing we knew, she was calling for a surgical assist (in 20 minutes!) and we were headed to the OR for a quick and unexpected C-section. I admit, I was a little freaked out and scared...mostly for Sean. When we heard his cry in the procedure room, it was the most beautiful sound ever! Even though it was a more dramatic delivery than we expected, we are so thankful that things happened the way they did before things got worse for baby Sean. It was truly a blessing.
Because his lungs were a little weak (and because we live a “mile high”!), Sean was having trouble breathing on his own. He stayed in the NICU for 5 days - on and off the breathing machine and oxygen. A couple times we thought he would improve enough to come stay in our room, but he could never quite make it. Thankfully, I stayed at the hospital the same amount of time because of the C-section, so we never had to go home without him.
We went home the evening of Thursday, January 31st. Sean was on oxygen for another week. Now he is doing really well - he is a great eater and a terrific sleeper. We hope it lasts! Grandma & Grandpa Olson and Grandmother Davidson have been here to help us and are lifesavers! So far, big brother Evan has only asked once if we are taking baby “Juan” back to the hospital?!?
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. We wouldn’t have made it through without them!
